Technical demonstration: from plan to 3D

Demonstration: from a 2D plan to a 3D apartment walkthrough in Morocco

This demonstration starts from a 2D plan of a three-bedroom apartment and rebuilds it in three dimensions: eight rooms, walls, doors and windows placed to the dimensions on the plan, then furniture, materials and light. The result is a 3D model, a series of room-by-room renders and a walkthrough video.

The plan is a demonstration document created for the exercise, unrelated to any real development. What matters here is the production chain, which can be repeated on the plan of a developer, an agency or an architect.

Walkthrough video generated from the plan

The route starts on the dollhouse view, enters through the front door, follows the hallway, then visits the living room, the main bedroom, the kitchen, the second bedroom, the third bedroom and a bathroom.

What this demonstration shows

  1. 01Geometry modelled from the dimensions: proportions, walls and openings match the plan
  2. 02A dollhouse overhead view, then interior views in every room
  3. 03Photorealistic rendering applied on the exact geometry, without moving a wall or a piece of furniture
  4. 04A walkthrough video assembled from faithful key frames, delivered in 16:9 and in 9:16

Creative approach

  1. 01

    Reading the plan

The dimensions, the openings and the purpose of each room are taken down to build a wall grid to scale.

  2. 02

    3D model

Walls, doors, windows and furniture are modelled to scale, with a camera placed in every room.

  3. 03

    Rendering

Each key frame is rendered from the model, then materials and light are pushed to photorealism without touching the geometry.

  4. 04

    Video

The key frames are linked by continuous camera moves, then edited with a title card per room and a vertical cut.

Potential uses

  • Off-plan sales for a new development
  • A listing with a video walkthrough before works or before furnishing
  • Presenting a project to an investor or a financing partner
  • Deciding on finishes and layout
